Jorn Swart & Malnoia | Piano, Viola, & Bass Clarinet
Malnoia is an unorthodox trio led by NYC-based pianist / composer Jorn Swart that mixes jazz and chamber music. Their first album was released in 2017 and described by Downbeat Magazine as a “seamless interplay of unusual sonorities”.
In January 2018, the trio presented the album in a series of concerts in the Netherlands, and made an appearance on national television on the show Vrije Geluiden. In April of that year, the group performed in Egypt, both in Cairo and at the legendary Library of Alexandria. In June 2018, Malnoia opened the "European Sounds Series" as part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York City.
The trio features pianist Jorn Swart with Benni von Gutzeit, of the Turtle Island Quartet, on viola, and Lucas Pino, whose renowned "No Net Nonet” has a residency at Small’s Jazz Club, on bass clarinet. Malnoia sweeps the listener up in a moving musical experience that has been described by All About Jazz as “brimming with cryptic gifts and Delphic designs that manage to fascinate and confound.
The trio’s upcoming album “Hello Future” (March 2021) is a new and exciting format: through a series of short stories, each tied to a composition, the album explores what it means to be human in a technological age.
