Danielle Wertz | Rest Your Head | Single
Described as, "untarnished by the politics of music" (Jazz Music Archives) and "at home alongside more contemporary exponents of improvising singing" (LoudMouth, AU) Oakland-based artist, 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition semi-finalist and 2017 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition runner-up, Danielle Wertz, has rapidly gained national acclaim. Today she releases her single “Rest Your Head (One for Natalie)” commenting that this song originally came to life for her while on a silent meditation retreat. When getting home from the retreat, my friend Natalie was going through a tough time and what I had already written on retreat felt like it had been written for her, so I wrote the next verse as if it was for her. Then a dear mentor of mine took his life and it felt as if every lyric had been written for him, almost as if this was the last outcry from his community before he took his life, so the next part is for him.
