“Bit Her Sweet Christopher Street ” depicts the Christopher Street park in New York’s west village and is inspired by Claude Debussy’s song cycle Cinq Poèmes de Baudelaire—the harmonies, his vocal writing style with fluid rhythms and time signatures governed by the natural speech rhythms in the poetic line, as well as by Baudelaire’s poetry.
