Jared Dubin | Trombone
Born and raised in Connecticut, trombonist and composer Jared Dubin grew up amidst the perpetual sounds of his parents’ vinyl and cassette tape collection. With the eclectic sounds of everything from Simon and Garfunkel to Steely Dan in his ears, Dubin paid particular attention to his father’s Weather Report and Miles Davis fusion albums. One day, while still young, Dubin’s grandfather - who was a big fan of the music of the Swing Era - showed him “The Glenn Miller Story,” after which Dubin immediately gravitated towards the trombone. From that day on, Dubin became enamoured with the instrument and, through the public school system, took every learning and performance opportunity he could get.
It was during this time in the public school system that Dubin became introduced to artists who continued to influence him for the rest of his life. From his cousin’s interest in Chick Corea and Frank Zappa, to the tapes of Maynard Ferguson, Maceo Parker, Miles Davis, and Dirty Dozen Brass Band that were leant to him by his middle school band director, Dubin’s musical reach and interest spans genres, instruments, and conventions. In high school, Dubin dug deeper into jazz tradition and became heavily influenced by jazz trombone greats such as Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Steve Davis, and Steve Turre. Also during this time, Dubin began listening to hip hop and R&B and latching on in particular to the sounds of D’Angelo, Musiq Soulchild, and Common, amongst others.
Following high school, Dubin pursued Music Education - and later a double major in both this and Jazz Studies - at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. Here, he studied classical trombone under former principal of the Costa Rican National Symphony and past member of the American Wind Symphony, L. Fernando Jiminez. During this time Dubin began to independently take private lessons from jazz trombone legend Steve Davis and attended his jazz trombone workshops at the Hartt School, and frequented jam sessions in the Hartford, CT scene.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Dubin began to work professionally, first as a high school band director and simultaneously a sideman in various big bands, and then as a cruise musician. Following this, he enrolled in graduate studies at Queens College where he jumped headfirst into the New York scene. Studying trombone under Luis Bonilla, improvisation under Antonio Hart, and composition under Michael Phillip Mossman and Todd Bashore, Dubin became strongly equipped to make his mark as a professional musician.
Jared Dubin has performed at various venues and festivals, including Dizzy’s Club, the Apple Stomp Festival, Webster Hall, The Paramount Theater, the Great South Bay Music Festival, and the Sag Harbor American Music Festival. He has performed with jazz legend Jon Batiste and has been an integral member of the iconic New York City-based ska band, The Scofflaws, over the past decade.
